Always the Entrepreneur

Any musician (especially an indie one like me) who is trying to make a living at their art knows you’ve got to be great in your business skills, not just your musical skills. I’m always taking in as much info as I can about how to strengthen these business skills. I get info from other artists and business people I meet, conferences I attend, friends, family & fans. I also obsessively read articles, books, and blogs. Lately, there are a few blogs that have been on my radar quite a bit. I thought I’d take a moment to share some of them with you. If you are an entrepreneurial artist like me, you might find them helpful to follow.

Escape from Cubicle Nation

This is a blog written by Pamela Slim who wrote a book of the same name. Although it’s written towards an audience of individuals who are fed up with their corporate jobs and are trying to become entrepreneurs and escape their “cubicles”, it’s really incredibly appropriate for anyone starting or running an independent business. Super well written and down to earth advice about solving your entrepreneurial dilemmas.

CopyBlogger This is a blog about copywriting/blogging. Again, not directly a site for musicians, but being someone who is trying to make a living out of getting whole stories across in about 3 minutes set to music…..I believe copywriting skills are pretty much in the same camp as those for songwriting. Super useful ideas for lyric writers and getting your point across.

Quiet Little Life This is a blog run by a women named Kay Pere that I met in Nashville last year at the Indiegrrl Music Conference. She ran a workshop on how to bring balance to your hectic life as an artist and entrepreneur. She offers some great tips.

Ariel Publicity And as always, Ariet Hyatt has one gazillion great pieces of advice about PR to offer to musicians. Every now and again, I check in with what’s she writing and saying. Always good info! She has a super great info packet that she’s sending out right now when you sign up for her mailing list called The Musician’s Guide to Social Media.
